How to create a Dragonfly pond We have covered many aspects of creating a pond here but we can offer some simple guidelines to create a small and equally sustainable environment for dragonflies. So, what to dragonflies require?
A garden pond can offer all this however, fish will reduce the chances of dragonflies colonising a pond as they may eat the dragonfly nymphs. You will find it hard to re-create the wild environment that dragonflies enjoy but why not give it a go? A pond rich in emergent vegetation and shelter is a good start. A pond that partially dries out is not a disadvantage provided there is some permanent water. Gradually the pond will stabilise and develop its own"ecosystem"and dragonflies may take up residence if you are near an area where they live. The surrounding environment is equally important. It should provide perches and food for adults so, mature gardens that have a variety of plants will be ideal. Help provide a home for dragonflies! |
