Owners: Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, The North Mill, Bridge Foot Belper Email:derbywt@cix.co.uk Habitat:A Reserve of 29 hectares of worked- out gravel pits, with open water, marsh, carr and other woodland, including pine plantations. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Access: The Reserve lies south west of Derby, just off the A516 where it is cut by the new A564 Derby-Stoke dual carriageway. There is good access for the disables at the southwest entrance car park south of Blakelow Farm on Sutton Lane. Specialities:Emperor Dragonfly Anax imperator and Ruddy Darter Sympetrum sanguineum Associated Natural History: A splendid site for wetland plants, amphibians and water birds. For the tree lover there are two good sized Black Popular, one of the UK's rarest native trees to be found in the wild. Of key interest to Botanists are the sedimentation lagoons, which have developed good populations of spotted and southern marsh Orchids, and hybrids between the two. Common Terns breed on the artificial rafts. |
