| List of Species |
Owner:Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service Habitat:A
recently restored Colliery spoil heap, Bolsover Tip South. Most of the
original tip has been left in its natural state. Nature has been doing a
good job but has had a helping hand from Derbyshire County Council's
Consulting Engineers and Countryside Service. A pool has been created on
top of the heap. Dragonflies have already found this new pool. Three
further wetland areas have been put in on the eastern side of the site
including a new reed bed area. With the Doe Lea running through the site
and Carr Vale next door Dragonflies have discovered the new opportunities
very quickly. New plantations and grasslands have also been created.
Access:Visitors
can come into the reserve off the Stockley Trail, which connects, from the
Carr Vale Reserve. Visitors arriving by car can use the Car Park off the
A632 Grid Ref SK 463707
Specialities:Emperor
Dragonfly Anax imperator & Black-tailed Skimmer Orthetrum cancellatum
Other
natural history interest in the summer: The stretch of the Doe Lea is good
for Water Vole and Kingfisher. Warblers can be found along the former
railway embankment. Check out the neutral grasslands for a variety of
flowering plants.
Grub
Stop:Darter Class. SK 465709The Castle Arms, a classic old
colliery pub which once served Bolsover Pit's thirsty miners after a shift
perhaps digging out fossils of Dragonflies! They
don't always have food on but hey you can have a pint or a glass of your
favourite lotion. If you are a 'foodie' a marvellous Emperor class stop
off is the Delicatessen on the left as you go up the hill on A632 which is
well worth a visit to pick up some interesting goodies.
